Hey! Great news everyone! I’ve started a 5K program w/ my friends Jacob Dickens and Summer McCoy. Basically, the program begins with running 1.5 miles every other day, and every week you increase your distance by a quarter mile. (Here’s the PDF schedule here: )

What’s nice about it is I used to run cross-country in high school, so I actually enjoy running. [Note - I retained NONE of my HS physique!] However, I have improved my time dramatically after my first two sessions:

Session 1: 17.30 min (1.5 mi)
Session 2: 15.30 min (1.5 mi)

The only issues that I’ve had so far is after my first session, I received identical 1″ blisters on the inside sides of my feet. Luckily, I wear flips flops 24/7 so they basically healed enough to where I could run again tonight. (Session 2)

The ultimate goal of the program is to run in a 5K sometime within the next 8-12 weeks! So lookout!

After moving to a city where I am friends with less people than I have fingers, I’ve realized that making friends is harder when you don’t have a nearly unlimited supply of people your age group, engaged in a like-minded place. – i.e. College.

This transition hasn’t been too terrible for me though. Since graduating school nearly a year ago, I lived in my home town. (less the past two months that I’ve lived in Tulsa) While I was there, my only friends were my parents and my grandparents.

I guess the hardest part of the new city transition is the fact that I know longer need to spend every weekend traveling to visit people or hosting people visiting. I feel very unproductive just…doing nothing during the weekend.

How odd.

Today, I was googling a friend’s name from my old high school, and up popped an old .pdf file of my high school newspaper. Apparently, they have every edition dating back to the beginning of 2004 – which meant all the papers when I was there were still up. So – I downloaded the May 2006 edition, which included a special editorial from the Editor-in-Chief. The editor was…

…CHRIS BRINLEE, JR! So, this post is in honor of him:

Bear Facts – Mena High School – May 2006

Students – the time has fi nally come. For the last thirteen years, the class of 2006 has been eagerly awaiting May 19. Some may ask, “May 19 – just another day in spring, right?” Wrong! That date marks this year’s commencement exercises for seniors at Mena High School. As graduates, we are preparing to begin the rest of our lives. Although a few students have suffered from “senioritis” for the past couple of grading periods, we are prepared to move forward. Some have chosen to continue their education and enroll in college. Others have chosen to enter the workforce. A select few have committed themselves to military service. Each path, although different, leads in the same direction – tomorrow. We are the future lawyers, plumbers, doctors, custodians, and data analysts. The future is in our hands. In an age of advanced technology, no other generation is better suited than we are. Virtually all aspects of modern life are computer based, including the programming of scrolling marquee – comprehension of those skills is mandatory. We are able to learn, create, and exercise training with ease. We are intelligent, ingenious, and determined to succeed in this world. Failure is not an option. Rest easy, Dear. The class of 2006 is here! Our future is bright – no questions asked, but without past experiences we would not be the men and women that we are today. It is important to learn from our own mistakes as well as others’. Many have learned that wearing spandex shorts in public might not be “appropriate” in the eyes of some. A few have learned that some things are better left “unannounced” or at least not published in a highly visible place if the subject (or event) may be considered questionable by many authorities. Multiple students have learned to mark their names on (free—public) cafeteria seats to prevent them from being “stolen” during lunch. Each person should make careful note not to sit in one of those marked seats. Injustice lies all around us. As students – as Americans, it is our civic duty to stand up, be heard, and make a difference! We must fi ght corruption. Always defend those who are persecuted. This world is becoming increasingly volatile. Deception lurks around each corner. Don’t be caught off guard. We have the opportunity to move forward and change the world around us. Students, learn from your own and others’ mistakes. Keep your goals in sight and success will be eminent. Follow your dreams. Make your own decisions and take responsibility for your actions. Value liberty, for freedom is not free. Support the U.S. military and our nation’s leaders. Change the world. Our time is now!

Chris is currently finishing his FINAL semester of the Savannah College of Art & Designs (SCAD) and has meet/befriended/worked with numerous artists and celebrities over his design/photographer/cinematographer career. He was right about one thing, and he certainly pursued it. – “Our time is now!”

It was the year of shitty cinema sequels and even worse sophomore albums. (See MGMT’s “Congratulations”) However dismal Hollywood was, the music industry did grant us some gems.

10. She & Him – “Volume Two”

This album was long over due from Zooey Deschanel & M. Ward’s first album, Volume One, from back in March 2008. The most notable non-album appearance the duo made between their two LP releases was “I Put a Spell on You” from Starbuck’s Sweethearts compilation. The first single released from Volume Two was an up beat number entitled “In the Sun” that has same musical essence off “Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?”. They include covers on this album, just like on Volume One, including New Rhythm and Blues Quartet’s “Ridin’ in My Car” and Milton Kellem’s “Gonna Get Along Without Ya Now” – both favorites on the album. Matt Ward’s signature dry, metallic guitars make the album reminiscent of basically every 1970′s era love-song album. I can only hope that they keep out the mixture of original songs and brilliant covers on Volume Three.

9. Black Keys – “Deluxe”

Today marks my exit from one of my favorite social networks, Foursquare.

Foursquare is a mobile, location-based social game/experience that allows users to “check in” to locations they visit. You get points per visit, etc. It’s a neat way to discover new areas and connect with local people. You get the picture.

One aspect of Foursquare is if you visit (i.e. “check in”) to a location often enough you become “mayor” of said location. This were I got carrie away.

I began playing Foursquare back in July and discovered that Mena, AR had literally no one playing. This allowed me to basically rack up as many mayorships as I wanted. After my first 10, I grew greedy – checking in while just driving by, etc. It became nearly an obsession. Madeline, my girlfriend, would be annoyed with me jumping on my phone every time we would pull up to Resturant.

I finally decided that after 100 mayorships, I’d let Foursquare go. Today was that way. My final claim was the QuikTrip on 11th Street in Tulsa, OK.
